I was in a ‘clinical trial’ for a similar procedure invented by an MD in Australia. Essure sounds almost exactly like what I had done. I had 2 children at the time and couldn’t afford tubal ligation so I opted for this procedure. I believe they were supposed to insert what they called a ‘matrix’ which I was told was a plastic device about the size of a grain of rice. After placement this would be ‘surrounded by scar tissue’. After several appointments with the MD they finally cleared me to have the procedure. The whole thing was a total debacle. The ‘inventor’ was present in the OR, holding my hand, they inserted a scope into my fallopian tube, heated it and attepted to ‘drop off the matrix’. The clamp at the end ‘wouldn’t open’ (by this time I’m in pain and was having what felt like contractions) They pulled it out and tried the other tube, it still ‘wouldn’t open’. So here I am in tears due to pain and feeling that perhaps I was meant to get pregnant again. Well, lo and behold, I became pregnant again despite the fact the the device ‘heated up’ my fallopian tubes. The doctor wanted me to come back and try again. I used a few explatives, ‘are you freaking kidding me?’ The inventor informed me that out of hundreds of women who this has been performed on, I was the ONLY person that had the device fail. In short, I have a healthy, wonderful 9 year old boy who I call my ‘surprise’. I thank God every day that this procedure didn’t work on me. Perhaps it has been perfected since then. I think in theory it’s a good idea but I was told I was very likely to have an ectopic pregnancy due to my tubes being ‘heated’. I had a perfectly normal pregnancy other than the fact that my little Shane was 10lbs, 4oz! C-section of course. Not sure if anyone will read this but there it is….
