I’m a 30 yr old mother of 3 and here is my story about how I was pushed to receive the Essure from my doctor. It was 2005 and I had just delivered my 2nd child. She was 1 month old and had gotten sick and was admitted into the ICU in Atlanta, Georgia. I had already decided that I didn’t want more children after my 2nd daughter and I had already signed all of my paperwork to have my tubal done. I had my appointment set up with my doctor and I received a phone call from the physician’s office. ‘We were informed that your daughter was admitted into the hospital and we have your appointment set up for your tubal consultation. There are things we will need to go over and discuss before we’re going to go through with anything. You will still make your appointment for your consultation, correct?’ At this time, I was thinking something was wrong with the paperwork and was a bit concerned. I went to my appointment and the doctor came in, a few papers in her hand, & sits down. ‘I’m very sorry Ms. Shaw about your daughter being admitted in ICU. However, I will not perform your tubal procedure for you because if your daughter DIES, you will want more children.’ As I sit there furious, tears flowing down my face, and worried as to what my options are now, she informs me that she is GOING to give me the option of a 10 yr IUD (Paraguard) and after the 10 yrs I would be able to decide if I wanted more children or not. At this time, I felt that this was my only option, so I went through with the IUD. ‘WORST NIGHTMARE EVER!!!’ After the placement of my IUD, I bled for 2 yrs straight! Every doctor that I consulted about this would tell me this was all normal and part of my body adjusting. The pain in my lower back was horrific!! In 2008, I decided to get my IUD removed. At the appointment to remove it, my doctor discovered that I was ‘PREGNANT!’ I delivered my 3rd child in Sept 2009. I called my doctor to set up my 6 wk check up after delivering my son and told her that this was it and I was certain that I was done having children. She told me that since my IUD didn’t work, she recommended the Essure procedure. It sounded like a good option for me!! The actual procedure wasn’t bad. On the way home was when it all started to settle in. My abdomen was killing me, it was so hard to walk, my legs were cramping up, severe headache, etc. I just thought, ‘I just had this done so it will all settle down in a few days.’ I WAS WRONG! Within 2 weeks after my procedure, I was in the emergency room and they were running tests and blood work. They thought I had gotten pregnant in my tubes. Turns out it had set up a severe infection from the procedure. Two weeks worth of medications and I seemed to be getting back to normal. Every since my procedure was done in 2009, I have questioned a lot of things…bad headaches, joint pain, really severe cramping (with and without my period), really heavy periods that last for at times up to 2 weeks. I was told that the Essure had hardly any side effects at all and most of them would diminish within about 4-6 weeks after placement. Well, my son will be 6 in Sept of this year and I’m still having problems. THIS THING NEEDS TO BE TAKEN OFF OF THE MARKET AND EVERY WOMAN IN AMERICA NEEDS TO BE WARNED ABOUT THIS!!!
