I had the Essure procedure in May 2010. Almost immediately, I began to gain weight and have a bloated feeling, but because I was in my late 40s, my doctor said, ‘that’s just one of the things that happens to us when we get older,’ and he assured me that my weight gain had nothing to do with my Essure procedure. My weight gain settled primarily in my stomach, and I’ve had unexplained bloating ever since.
I have had bouts of unexplained cramps, but thankfully, nothing as severe as some of the other ladies have reported.
In an unrelated incident, last year, I bought a FitBit Force, and began to experience blistering and itching on my wrist after wearing it for about 2 weeks. I soon discovered that the part of the FitBit that touched my skin was made of nickel and that I had an allergy to nickel. Today, I saw a commercial for the Essure procedure that mentioned that it might not be appropriate for those allergic to nickel. Now, I am wondering if my bloating and abdominal weight gain could be a result of my allergy to nickel. If my wrist reacted so strongly to nickel, I can only imagine what must be happening to the tissue surrounding the implanted nickel coils. I will schedule an appointment with my gynecologist immediately.
I don’t recall anyone raising any concerns about the nickel allergy when I had the procedure in 2010, and even if they had raised the issue, I wouldn’t have known that I was allergic to nickel at that time and I was given no test in advance of the procedure.
