Yesterday I went in for my annual exam. I am 43 years old with 3 sons. After the checkup the doctor looked at my file and commented that I’m currently on birth control pills. He asked if I am done having children and if I’d like to discuss something more permanent for birth control. I asked him what my options were and he said that the newest procedure is Essure…he went on to tell me how great it is. I asked if there are any side effects. He answered that there the usual ones while having the procedure done as with any thing else. I asked if there would be any side effects after the procedure and he said ‘No.’ He told me to get dressed and meet him in my office so that we could discuss this more. I met him in the office and he went on to explain that they’ve been doing this procedure for almost 11 years now and it is so much better than anything else out there. He looked at his calendar and told me that he’d be available to perform the procedure on Nov. 21. He had me fill out a form and told me that someone would be calling to schedule the procedure. The last thing he said to me was, ‘We’ll get you fixed up!’ (Hello…I’m not broken!)
I left the office knowing that I’d do some research as soon as I got back to the office. As soon as I could I Googled ‘Essure’ and immediately found the ‘Essure problems’ Facebook page and Erin’s website that had so many horror stories! I was astounded at the amount of stories there were!!! and I believed every one of them.
Today the assistant called to ask about scheduling the appointment for the procedure…I interrupted her and said that I have decided to NOT have it done.
I’m mad! I am extremely concerned about the fact that there are doctors out there that blatantly lie and say that there are no side effects!! It’s like saying that women don’t matter. It is clear that women CAN and DO make a difference every day!
I want to say Thank You for creating this website and Thank You to the Facebook group. This has made all the difference in my decision to NOT have this procedure done.
I am deeply touched by the loving, caring and strong support that the Facebook group is giving to one another! My heart breaks to know that even one woman has had to go through the type of trauma this procedure has caused.
It is my constant prayer that this website and the Facebook group will continue to bring awareness to this issue and eventually have this device banned and have this company be held responsible. I also pray that each and every woman that has had this procedure will find peace, comfort and healing.
