In 2010 I gave birth to my 5th child at the age of 24.. Needless to say I was done!! My Doctor had spoken with me about Essure in the months leading up to delivery and because I only had one tube intact (the other was removed in 2006 due to an ectopic pregnancy) and I didn’t really want to be put to sleep (which happened anyway.. And I was not happy when I woke up BTW) she thought Essure would be the best thing for me.
So six weeks after my little Ellie was born, I went in and had the procedure done.. The pain I had after was NOTHING like they had described it would be. And they didn’t give pain medication for it even after I called bawling my eyes out in terrible pain. I was told to use a heating pad. What a joke that was. Fast forward a couple of months and here comes the nausea every single day (and still now in 2015 there are a lot of days when all day I feel so sick. For reasons no one knows right).
Fast forward again to 6 months after my procedure and the sickness gets worse and finally I went to my regular doctor to ask if he could figure out what was wrong because I couldn’t take it anymore.. And he says is there any way you could be pregnant. ‘No sir’ I say. ‘I had Essure put in a little over 6 months ago’ … (He didn’t even know what it was btw he had to Google it) let’s do a test just to be safe he said. I laughed but complied.. A little later he comes back in the room and says your pregnancy test was positive.
Now knowing this doctor for as long as I had I waited for him to say just kidding. But instead he said we need to send you for ultrasound right away because with the Essure the baby is probably growing in your tube. So away I went. I was scared to death because I had been there before. But lucky and shockingly for me the baby was in the uterus. She was born six weeks early and through my whole pregnancy there was concern about the coil rupturing my water bag. It didn’t happen thank God. But my placenta did rupture during labor and she got blood in her lungs (is it related? Who knows)
So after I go back in and have the dye test done. And they say everything is blocked you must have gotten pregnant on the side with no tube (every other doctor I’ve said this to has looked at me like I’m nuts and said that’s impossible and there have been several) so finally I’m told maybe it was a six month thing and it shouldn’t happen again because my scar tissue is completely sealing everything.
Roll on three years later and on December 22nd 2014 I had a baby boy by c-section. Due to placenta previa which would have never happened to me if the Essure had of worked to begin with. None of the things in this story would have. And I sure wouldn’t have 7 children. I do love them all very much but it gets challenging. Please, please look at every option before considering Essure the fail rate was supposed to be almost 0 when I had it done.
But there are LOTS of people who have had it fail them just as it did me. And the sad thing is.. There’s nothing we can do about it.. Because it didn’t leave us disabled or disfigured in some way. Migraines which I didn’t mention before and nausea for the rest of our lives along with unexpected mouths to feed (again I love them very much) doesn’t count.
I feel for you Robin! I too suffer from Essure complications.
I had terrible problems associated with this device inside my body! One coil actually protruded out and wedged down between my colon and uterus causing a small hole in my colon and having to have my tube removed. I lost at least 8 weeks of work and had and still have terrible pain on my left side but they say it’s scar tissue pain.
Thank you both for commenting … It seems like every day new side effects emerge because of Essure.. It was a few years before I know it was to blame for many of my problems. E-Belly is the latest thing I have heard personally.. I hate that we all have to suffer with this.. And hope something can be done for all of us .
