I had the Essure procedure done about 7 years ago. I was also having heavy periods and so the doctor performed a uterine ablation at the same time. My GYN told me that Essure was safer than tradition sterilization methods, so I agreed without hesitation.
Since the procedure, I have horrible cramps for about 5 days leading up to my light period and then for about 3 days through my period. I also get occasional stabbing pains on the right side of my lower abdominal area.
Since thr GYN who performed the procedure has retired, I saw a different GYN about 1 1/2 years ago. She told me that there was no way springs so small could cause so much pain. I brought up the possibility that maybe I am allergic to nickel. She put me through a transvaginal ultrasound to check placement of the coils. During the ultrasound, the technologist said that it appeared as though the coils were not even in the tubes. He even pointed to the screen and showed me the coils. Once my GYN got the results, she told me that the coils were in the tubes and all was normal.
My GYN did eventually tell me that if it is the coils causing so much pain, my only option would be to get a hysterectomy. I’m terrified of surgeries…so admittedly I have put this off for a long time and I’ve just dealt with the fact that I will be in pain for almost 1/3 of every month. I have since also tested myself at home with a nickel taped to my inner arm. I am in fact allergic to nickel based on the very itchy welt I got from that test.
